Mmm - I probably need to see the film in imax … but at my local cinema I didn’t feel I lacked sound and visual effects - they were impressive and I was expecting and got a visceral feel. So I’m assuming what I enjoyed would be dialled up to 11 - I’ll go at some stage. But what it had in presentation and perhaps editing - for me it lacked in substance. Of all the scenes/episodes from the amazing source (why was bottling up the winds left out) - it is quite significant that many reviewers have highlighted the circe episode as being the most impactful.. and it’s the one least expansive or cinematic in its scope - more theatrical. Why so? I loved the horse of course / but Im mystified how the sirens could have been so un alluring! I had the same problem with Dunkirk - for all the razzmatazz on offer I think Nolan somehow can’t let himself rise to the challenge of the big canvas at crucial moments. Performances all fine - with the exception of the Charlie’s theron pieces feeling like backstage chat at a bounty ad - and Matt Damon surprisingly good as the Everyman Odysseus. Give me Oppenheimer anytime - ahead in all categories. But it was enjoyable and it’s a great story when all is said!
