Is it possible for you to provide a companion piece on this mythical beast called Filmstack.
You appear to know your way around these parts, and Substack's algorithm seems intent on hiding many other great film writers from potential readers.
I keep hearing people talking about Filmstack as if it were an active community or a unified presence. And yet I (like many others) struggle to come across instances of film writing of note.
Thanks so much for putting this together in one place!
I have seen anyone mention this yet so if you're putting another list together I'd like to recommend Rebel Without a Crew by Robert Rodriguez, the book that first inspired me to try making my own short films with what little equipment I had. It's from 1995 and re-reading it now feels in parts like a missive from an entirely different world, but Rodriguez's passion for film really shines through in the details he gives you about the process, the lengths he goes to to make it happen, and in many ways his 'learn by doing' approach is every bit as valid today. Also, the diary format is compelling, intimate and entertaining. A great read and, if you want to make films, a really inspiring one.
Great list!! I’d humbly like to suggest for anyone’s future collection my own book, THE CHEERFUL SUBVERSIVE’S GUIDE TO INDEPENDENT FILMMAKING (specifically the 2nd Edition) (Routledge/FocalPress) - also avail as audiobook narrated by me. It’s everything I know about directing, financing, casting, producing, festing, distributing, awardzing NonDē films. Nice blurbs from Sean Baker and on Scott Macaulay on back cover :)
"Story Of The Eye" is actually very short, so I'd recommend it for anyone younger in the house, as it's perfect for all ages.

Great recs! Cheers Will
This is a great list Mr. Ed. Thank you so much.

Great recommendation! I actually bought this book a couple of weeks ago, but haven’t dug into it yet. Looking forward to it even more now.
